Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

You can either submit a link to a story or picture or video that you consider relevant or vote on an existing entry. You can also comment on stories and save interesting stuff to your personal bookmarks area.

How do I add something to Laaik.it?

Easy, just click the green Add a Link button at the top of most of the pages (if you can't see it, just click the Laaik.it logo and it will take you to a page with the button on it). This will start our lightening quick two step submission process. Remember to have the URL of the item you're submitting handy, as well as a headline and a description.

You can also submit links using our handy browser shortcut (or "bookmarklet" in geek-speak). Just drag this link: Laaik this onto your browser's toolbar (if you don't see the toolbar, check your browser's View settings – it is either called "Links" or "Bookmarks" depending on what browser you use).

Whenever you come across something that catches your eye, just click this link and it will automatically begin the submission process. (If you don't want to surf away from the page, you can just right click and open the submission in a new tab).

I don't understand, why do I need to add a headline and a description? Can't you just use the item's own info?

The point of Laaik.it is to let you express your OWN opinion on the news. You might want to put a different spin on a story, or make a point that the story fails to cover. Also some items don't have headlines or descriptions. A cute picture of a cat, for instance, would need you to describe it, otherwise it wouldn't have a heading at all.

What's the point of all these categories and types?

People like to have some structure when they're looking for things in cyberspace, otherwise the whole world just blends together into a huge mess. Categories and types help us (and you) to tell Laaik.it where your submission should live. Remember, Laaik.it is just as much about discovering great content as it is about submitting it.

And tags? Why do you need tags when you've got categories?

We don't know everything, and we can only have a limited number of categories, so we can't always offer you the ideal way to organise your links. What tags do is give you another, more flexible way to organize your links. Tags can be anything from "funny" to "sewing" to "world history". It's an intentionally open-ended system – it allows you to define your own set of topics.

But where do these tags get displayed?

At the moment the only place they are visible is in our "tag cloud". You can see this in the "Popular topics" block on the front page. The size of the tags indicates how many people have used it. In the future there will also be more ways to view and sort tags, making them more useful as time goes on.

Hey, I just added a link and now I can't find it. Where did it go?

When you submit new links they go into our "virgin links" section. Then, when they receive enough votes, they make it into the "upcoming links" sections and, if they're interesting enough, they may make it all the way to our "most popular" section.

But I added something a while ago and I still don't see it?

If a link doesn't make it into Upcoming or Most Popular within 12 to 24 hours it will expire. That ensures that only the most interesting stuff makes it to the front page.

So who edits all this stuff?

You do. Laaik.it's content is created, edited and debated entirely by our users. This is your news about what you think matters.

Why don't you allow duplicate submissions?

We need to be sure that everyone's votes are collected in one place, so that the most relevant stories float to the top. You can still save duplicate stories to your own bookmarks area though.
